Abstract

This article critically examines the nuanced evolution of Israel’s security doctrine against the backdrop of contemporary geopolitical shifts within the Middle East. Historically anchored in existential concerns stemming from its establishment in 1948, Israel’s security paradigms have been molded by a complex interplay of regional, historical, and global factors. Central to this analysis is the enduring Arab-Israeli conflict, marked by multiple wars and intermittent confrontations, which has engendered a defensive posture emphasizing preemptive strikes and deterrence mechanisms. Additionally, the study delves into the pivotal role of external alliances, particularly with the United States, highlighting how military aid, intelligence collaboration, and diplomatic support have fortified Israel’s strategic resilience while also necessitating recalibrations in response to evolving U.S. policies. Furthermore, the research elucidates the significance of territorial imperatives, emphasizing Israel’s strategic depth considerations vis-à-vis territories like the Golan Heights, West Bank, and Gaza Strip. These regions serve dual purposes: as buffer zones against potential threats and as platforms for early warning systems, underscoring the doctrine’s emphasis on territorial integrity as a cornerstone of national security. The article also probes into Israel’s policy of nuclear ambiguity, assessing its role as a potent deterrent against existential threats and its implications for regional stability. Incorporating insights from the rise of non-state actors such as Hezbollah and Hamas, the study underscores Israel’s adaptive responses to asymmetric warfare, guerrilla tactics, and proxy confrontations. Moreover, against the backdrop of the post-Arab Spring Middle East characterized by civil strife, state fragmentation, and the ascendance of extremist entities, the research delineates Israel’s strategic recalibrations in navigating multifaceted challenges. In synthesizing these multifaceted elements, this research offers a comprehensive elucidation of Israel’s transformed security doctrine, illuminating its adaptive strategies, enduring imperatives, and intricate interplay with modern Middle Eastern geopolitics.
