Abstract

The article analyzes the names of professions taking into account the professional and social affiliation of the residents of Chernivtsi in the first half of the 20th century. Their etymology was studied and a detailed count of representatives of professions represented in Chernivtsi in 1915-1933 was carried out. For the first time, based on the analysis of a historical document, namely, the metrical book of Bukovyna, a study of the professional and aristocratic affiliation of the residents of Chernivtsi in the first half of the 20th century was carried out, and their etymology, quantitative and qualitative correlation of professions was clarified. An interdisciplinary research method using historical-comparative, classification, systematization, sociological and etymological research methods was applied. The conducted studies of metric books of the first half of the 20th century with a detailed analysis of the etymological and ethnic components of the registration records of deceased residents of Chernivtsi indicate a significant advantage of representatives of working professions and military personnel over the total number of officials, managers, clergy and aristocrats. Among the names of professions, German and etymologically German names predominate, the next step is occupied by Romanian names of professions, the third and fourth – Latin and, respectively, Polish names of professions, the fifth and sixth steps, given the specifics of the source, belong to etymologically French and Ukrainian professions. This scientific research will be an impetus for further research, in which special attention should be paid to the historical and geographical aspect of the formation and development of Bukovyna in the 20th century in combination with the socio-cultural component of the history of Chernivtsi.
